Performances and Community Events 2023

October is Filipino American History Month and we would like to express our gratitude to the Filipino American National Historical Society of Greater Chicago for their calendar of events. You can check out the schedule of activities here and we encourage everyone to actively participate and support the celebration of Filipino American history and culture.

This year’s theme is “1898: Recognizing 125 Years of Philippine-American History” which marks the 125th anniversary of the Treaty of Paris, an agreement between Spain and the United States that led to the U.S. annexation of the Philippines.

Click here to read more about it.

Please note that this is a HISTORY month, not a “Heritage” month, as history encompasses experiences and events that have shaped our lives, culture, and heritage.

Additionally, CIRCA Pintig is hosting the 2023 ADOBO FESTIVAL event at Seafood City Chicago, which includes food sampling, trivia, games, and an ADOBO Challenge. If you’re interested in submitting your family’s Adobo recipe, please send a message to [email protected] for more details. You can also enter for a chance to win a $100 SFC gift card by sharing your story about what Adobo means to you and your family on Instagram. Just tag @seafoodcitysupermarket and #2023abobofestival as part of your submission by October 27th and don’t forget to tag @circapintigtheatre for additional recognition!

This year’s fundraiser, CHICAGO-STYLE, will directly support Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble’s and The Center for Immigrant Resources and Community Arts exciting new collaborative project, “Panther In The Sky” and our arts education and production lineup. “Panther” explores the lives of four mothers grappling with the tragic loss of their teenage sons to gun violence. This discussion will inspire CDE’s focus on “Creating Safer Communities” in our forthcoming production season and arts education programming.

Our fundraiser will be held November 11th at the Auditorium at Ebenezer Lutheran Church (CDE’s performance space), 1650 W. Foster Avenue, from 7:00p.m. -10:00 p.m., with a VIP hour from 6:00p.m. -7:00 p.m. We encourage participants to come celebrate our beautiful city, dressed in their favorite Chicago attire, and help us con

tinue to create community through the arts “One Voice, One Story, One Person at a Time.” Much gratit

ude to CDE for the wonderful collaboration.

Watch Tao Po and be engaged

Let our conversations spark the future we desire!

RATIONALE:

So that the world will know what is happening in the Philippines and understand the human cost of our government’s war on drugs. At the same time, find a creative way to link this with human rights issues anywhere in the world. And with post-screening discussions (Talkbacks) scheduled for every country where the movie will be available to watch, the conversations about the issues will continue and hopefully, effect change.

The Talkbacks:

As a critical component of the Film tour, the talkbacks sponsored by partner organizations in different parts of the world are intended to engage all who have viewed the film in safe and honest conversations. Insights, comments and questions become the springboard for exchanges of views and allow for perspectives, however different they may be, to enrich all those who participate. The hope is that the future that we all aspire may be sparked by our own conversations.

  — In December 2021, super-typhoon, Odette, severely devastated numerous areas in the Visayas region of the Philippines. Among them are communities in Negros Oriental and Cebu. CIRCA-Pintig will kick-off its 2022 Monthly Beat series with a virtual educational & fundraising event called Raising Voices: Stories from the Homefront / Climate Justice, on January 28th, 6 pm PT / 8 pm CT / 9 pm ET / Philippines Jan 29th 10am. The focus will be on the environmental crises in the Philippines and the need for solidarity and progressive action on Climate Justice. The goal is to raise a minimum of $2,500 to help at least 50 families ($50/family) return to their communities and rebuild their homes.

ABOUT OUR FEATURED COMMUNITY PARTNERS: Albany Park Theatre Project: Yours Truly Immersive theater in an envelope, delivered to your door by the USPS. As an audience member for this innovative new performance experience, you’ll receive four pen pal letters from Tala, a high-school junior who loves writing, music, doodling, and her Filipina heritage…and who is about to discover a family secret. Yours Truly will immerse you in the journey of an Albany Park teen navigating family relationships, cultural identity, adolescence – and a pandemic. Each envelope will also include art and music created by APTP teen artists – and special surprises sure to warm your heart. Yours Truly is inspired by a real-life story, crafted by APTP’s teen ensemble, and directed by Devika Ranjan. For more info: https://aptpchicago.org/   New Community Partner: Digital Tapestries We are excited to announce that Digital Tapestries’ film, Healing, has been selected in the Toronto Independent Festival of CIFT as Best Experimental Short in their August ‘21 competition. Since its inception in November 2015, this festival has featured the best of short and feature films in contemporary cinema. By combining montages with narrative storytelling, Healing explores the isolation fostered by the pandemic, with particular attention to the paradoxical complexities of connection and disconnection created by healthcare systems and technological innovations. Healing | Healing Series Part 1 As vaccines became more accessible, we worked on our first film in over a year with an actor, a grateful surprise that we couldn’t have expected. Healing explores through montage and narrative internal feelings of emptiness and disconnection. Particularly, during the isolating times of the pandemic, where healthcare systems and technological innovations added paradoxical complexities of connection and disconnection. Additionally, as a therapist I have often wondered where the line is between the therapist and the patient or client? We hope that Healing can be a space for the viewer to discover their own possibilities of healing.
